Crap Bets

Yes, in total there are approximately 40 total wagers you can make in Craps. They break down into only 10 categories though and are easy to understand. Here is a list of all craps bets that can be made along with an explanation to help you learn one of the fastest paced and most exciting casino table games of them all.

Pass Line

This is the most likely bet that all craps players make. It is the best bet on the craps table at a house edge of 1.41%. On this bet you are wagering that on the come out roll there will be a 7 or 11 which is an instant win. You are trying to avoid a 2, 3, or twelve on the first roll which is an instant lose. If a point is made, that the shooter will re-roll that number before a 7 is rolled.

Free Odds Bet

You can “take odds” on you pass line bet as soon as a point is established. Why FREE odds? These bets have no house edge and are paid based on the odds of a certain number being rolled. Different casinos offer different odds percentage and you can usually find them at 5x and 10x your original bet. Since these odds are competitively advertised to entice craps players, you can find some at 20x and even 100x your original bet. Each free odds bet is placed behind the original pass line bet in increments up to the max. For example: You make a $5 pass line bet at a 5x free odds game, you can place odds of up to $25 behind the pass line bet. This will make your total bet on the pass line $30.
Each point number pays different odds.

  • 4 and 10 - 2:1
  • 5 and 9 - 3:2
  • 6 and 8 - 6:5

Don't Pass Line

This wager you are betting against the shooter. The house edge is 1.36% but you may be frown upon at the table for betting against them. As expected, this craps bet is the opposite of the pass line bet. If the come out roll is a 7 or 11, you lose. A roll of 2 or 3 and you are a winner and 12 is a push or in craps called a “bar” and you do not win or lose. (Can lay odds on this bet as in #2)

Field Bet

When you place a field bet, it is for the next roll of the dice only. You are betting that the next roll is a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. At most casinos craps table, the payout on a 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 is 1:1, a 2 pays 2:1 and a 12 pays 3:1. Though not the worst bet on the table like some will tell you, the house edge is 2.77%.

Come Bet

This is real similar to the pass line bet and works the same way. This bet can be made at any time during the roll. Place a bet in the come bet section and whatever total the shooter rolls next is where your bet lies. There are little different rules for come bets. If the point is rolled during and you have come bets on the board, the bets stay active. On the preceding come out roll, if your number is rolled you lose the come bet but not any odds (see below) that you may have placed. (Can lay odds on this bet as in #2)

Don't Come Bet

This works in the reverse of the come bet. You are betting that a 7 will be rolled before the established point will be rolled. (Can lay odds on this bet as in #2)

Place Bets

The place bet can be made at any time but typically it is made after a point is established. You are betting on a particular number you “place” a bet on to be rolled before a 7. If a place bet is won, you will receive your winning based on the payouts below. After you win a place bet your winning are paid and you original bet is returned and you will have to replace the bet to win again. A place bet can be taken back at anytime.

  • A Place Bet on 4 or 10 pays 9:5
  • A Place Bet on 5 or 9 pays 7:5
  • A Place Bet on 6 or 8 pays 7:6

Buy Bet

The buy bet works the same as a place bet only the payoffs are different. You have to pay a commission to the house, usually 5%. Check on how the casino your playing in does it, some only make you pay on winning buy bets, some take it no matter what. The buy bet payouts are:

  • A Buy Bet on 4 and 10 – 2:1
  • A Buy Bet on 5 and 9 – 3:3
  • A Buy Bet on 6 and 8 – 6:5

Proposition Bets

These are bets that are made based on the next roll of the dice. Each bet is won or lose after the roll. Payouts are:

  • Any Craps - 7:1
  • Any Seven - 4:1
  • Eleven - 15:1
  • Ace-Deuce - 16:1
  • Aces - 31:1
  • Twelve - 31:1

The bottom line on prop bets is don’t make them. The house edge on prop bets go from 11.1% and 16.67%.

Hard Ways

If you have been around the craps table you have heard the terms before, “Give me 10 the hard way” or something similar. Hard Ways are when the dice total 4, 6, 8, 10 and when both die show the same number. So a 6 the hard way would be when both dice show 3.

A hard way bet stays on the table until the number is rolled not in pairs or when a 7 is rolled. The house edge on these bets is 11.1% for the 4 or 10 and 9.09% for the 6 or 8. The payout is:

  • 4 or 10 – 7:1
  • 6 or 8 – 9:1

**Note: The payouts you find here can change depending on the casino you are playing at.
